Country Rockers ‘The Steel Woods’ Taking The Stage At Deadwood Mountain Grand
DEADWOOD, S.D. (04/06/22) – On Sunday, June 26th The Steel Woods will bring their brand of country and Southern rock to the Deadwood Mountain Grand stage. The band, comprised of Wes Bayliss (guitar and vocals), Johnny Stanton (bassist), Isaac Senty (drums) and Tyler Powers (guitar), will perform fan favorites and songs from their three studio albums. All of their albums are self-produced and released on their own label, Woods Music.
The Steel Woods’ latest album, ‘All of Your Stones’, is the third offering from one of the fastest rising bands in the worlds of independent country and Southern rock. Since releasing their debut ‘Straw in the Wind’ album in 2017, The Steel Woods have staked their claim as worthy successors of Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd, with a dynamic live show and a songwriting verve that draws inspiration from country icons like Willie Nelson.
After Tragedy
In January 2021, band co-founder, guitarist and principal creative force Jason “Rowdy” Cope, passed away from what is thought to be complications of diabetes. This tragedy sent shockwaves through Cope’s friends, family, and the music community at large. The songs that make up ‘All of Your Stones’ now sound eerily prescient given Cope’s passing. Most of the tunes came from the creative pen and guitar of Rowdy, but even the ones contributed by Bayliss (“Ole Pal”) and guest songwriter Ross Newell have taken on a special poignancy.

The Steel Woods continue to tour, having shared the stage with Whiskey Myers, Cody Jinks, Cody Johnson, and Blackberry Smoke, among others. Between shows, they are at work on their next studio album. Music Legend Steve Earle Returns to Deadwood Mountain Grand
DEADWOOD, S.D. (03/28/22) – Over the past three decades, Steve Earle has established himself as a kind of rootsy Renaissance man. A Texas-bred songwriter that is also a political activist, radio host, rocker, actor and playwright and on Thursday, July 7th he will be bringing his many hits to the Deadwood Mountain Grand Event Center for a one-night only performance.
Steve Earle is one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation. A protege of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, he quickly became a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, The Pretenders, and countless others.
1986 saw the release of his record, ‘Guitar Town’, which shot to number one on the country charts and is now regarded as a classic of the Americana genre. Subsequent releases like ‘The Revolution Starts...Now’ (2004), ‘Washington Square Serenade’ (2007), and ‘Townes’ (2009) received consecutive GRAMMY® Awards.
Restlessly creative across artistic disciplines, Earle has published both a novel and collection of short stories, produced albums for other artists such as Joan Baez and Lucinda Williams and acted in films, television (including David Simon’s acclaimed ‘The Wire’), and on the stage. He currently hosts a radio show for Sirius XM.
In 2009, Earle appeared in the off- Broadway play ‘Samara’, for which he also wrote a score that The New York Times described as “exquisitely subliminal.” Earle wrote music for and appeared in Coal Country, a riveting public theater play that dives into the most-deadly mining disaster in U.S. history, for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award.
His 2020 album ‘Ghosts of West Virginia’ was named as one of “The 50 Best Albums of 2020 So Far” by Rolling Stone. Mr. Earle was recently (Nov 2020) inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and released his 21st studio album J.T. on January 6th (2021) as a tribute to his late son Justin Townes Earle.

Rising Country Stars ‘Flatland Cavalry’ To Perform At Deadwood Mountain Grand
DEADWOOD, S.D. (03/21/22) – One of the hottest up-and-coming country acts in the nation will make a tour stop at Deadwood Mountain Grand when Flatland Cavalry performs at Deadwood Mountain Grand on Saturday, May 14th.
Flatland Cavalry is breaking out into a gallop. After years of hot trotting across their native Texas, the country outfit is primed for a breakout with the release of their third full-length album, the sonically sprawling and wistfully written ‘Welcome to Countryland’.
The Texas sextet--bandleader and chief lyricist Cleto Cordero, guitarist Reid Dillon, bassist Jonathan Saenz, drummer Jason Albers, fiddle player Wesley Hall, and recent newcomer utility instrumentalist Adam Gallegos--continue to embrace their trademark sound while further pushing into the wild unknown.
When it was time to embark on recording a new album, resting on their laurels was simply out of the realm of possibilities. After the release of 2019's critically acclaimed ‘Homeland Insecurity’ and their 2016 full-length debut ‘Humble Folks’, they’ve been on a healthy trajectory rising through the country ranks.
After years of working with Lubbock stalwart Scott Faris in the friendly confines of Amusement Park Studios, Flatland decided a change of scenery was necessary. Despite some hesitation and a mix of emotions, they instantly knew recording at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studio A with rising producer Jake Gear was the right move.
"With our last two projects, we knew that room and setup. There's comfort in working with Scott," says Albers. "I think it was important to try and further expand with this album. Sonically, this album is definitely something bigger." “I think everyone kind of experienced this bit of nervousness going from Scott’s studio to Sound Emporium,” adds Dillon. “That first day, everyone was a little fidgety and shy. You eventually fall into this comfort zone.”
While the roster of collaborative confidants and colleagues (Spencer Cullum, Jim Hoke, Billy Justineau, Hailey Whitters, and Kaitlin Butts) has continued to expand with Flatland's sound stride for stride, ‘Countryland’ isn't a cut and paste effort with Nashville studio musicians. Rather, it finds the rootsy Texans delivering their A-game due to countless tour runs zig-zagging across the country and becoming seasoned performers and musicians. Since their humble beginnings out in the Panhandle town of Lubbock, Texas, Flatland Cavalry has embraced their surroundings and rural West Texas roots.
Formed in 2014 while attending Texas Tech University, Cordero and company made their presence felt within the Hub City songwriting circles and dancehall circuits. Banking on Cordero's earnest pen and the band's blend of country instrumentation, toe-tapping grooves, and earworm choruses, Flatland quickly became a regional sensation. The future definitely looks bright for Flatland Cavalry.

2022 ACM Nominated ‘Group Of The Year’ – Midland Making A Stop At Deadwood Mountain Grand

Hailing from Dripping Springs, TX lead vocalist Mark Wystrach fronts Midland’s rich sound that is rounded out with lead guitarist/vocalist Jess Carson and bass player/vocalist Cameron Duddy.
Rooted in tradition in both sound and style, the trio initially garnered attention playing clubs in the region. ‘Happy Together Tour’ Caps Kool Deadwood Nites With A Performance At Deadwood Mountain Grand
DEADWOOD, S.D. (02/28/22) – Six bands that shaped the world of rock-n-roll in the 60’s and 70’s will make a return tour stop at Deadwood Mountain Grand on Sunday, August 28. The ‘Happy Together Tour – ‘2022’ featuring The Turtles, Chuck Negron formerly of Three Dog Night, Gary Puckett & the Union Gap, The Association, The Vogues and The Cowsills.
Very few rock performers have remained as vital through the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s as have Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman of The Turtles, featuring Flo & Eddie. Though many remember their 1967 hit, "Happy Together," the Turtles were one of the more enjoyable American pop groups of the '60s, moving from folk-rock inspired by the Byrds to a sparkling fusion of Zombies-inspired chamber pop and straight-ahead, good-time pop reminiscent of the Lovin' Spoonful.
The band’s music was infused with beautiful vocal harmonies courtesy of dual front-men Kaylan and Volman. Though they hit number one in 1967 with the infectious "Happy Together," the Turtles scored more hits throughout their career including “Elenor”, “You Showed Me”, “She’d Rather Be With Me”, “It Aint Me Babe,” and more.
Chuck Negron, formerly the voice of Three Dog Night, has been captivating audiences for over five decades with his iconic vocals, unique humor and brilliant storytelling. His catalog of hits are timeless and appeal to music fans of all ages. Negron was the voice behind such Three Dog Night hits such as “Joy To The World”, “Old Fashioned Love Song”, “One” and “Try A Little Tenderness” among others.
Gary Puckett and the Union Gap was one of the most successful musical groups of the sixties. Gary's unmistakable signature voice garnered six consecutive gold records and top ten Billboard hits with the following titles:
"Young Girl”, “Woman Woman”, “Lady Willpower”, “Over You”, “This Girl Is A Woman Now”, “Keep The Customer Satisfied”, “Don’t Give In To Him” and “Home”.
Gary Puckett has performed on more than thirty network television shows and prime time specials during his career, even adding a command performance for the President and Prince Charles at the White House. The Union Gap disbanded in the seventies. In 1974, "Young Girl" was reissued in England where it received a silver record award for attaining a top five position on the pop charts, several years after its initial release.
In 1967, The Association made history being the first band anywhere to open a rock festival - the now historic, Monterey Pop Festival. One of the most successful bands to come out of the 60’s, they have sold millions of records, tapes, CDs and DVDs as well as earned a number of achievements including a Golden Globe nomination in 1970 for Best Original Song – ‘Goodbye Columbus’. The band has received 7 Grammy nominations including Rock & Roll Group Performance, Rock & Roll Recording and Vocal Group Performance for ‘Cherish’ as well as Contemporary Album for ‘Insight Out’, Contemporary Vocal Group for ‘Windy’ and Group Vocal Performance for ‘Never My Love’.
The Association has also received RIAA certifications for 6 gold and 3 platinum records. Their album, ‘The Association Greatest Hits’ (Warner Brothers) is now double platinum and continues to be one of the longest best-selling albums in the history of the company.
Harmony-pop vocal group the Vogues were formed in 1960 by lead baritone Bill Burkette, baritone Don Miller, first tenor Hugh Geyer, and second tenor Chuck Blasko, who were all high school friends from Turtle Creek, PA. Originally dubbed the Val-Aires, the foursome eventually signed to the tiny Co & Ce label, reaching the number four spot in the autumn of 1965 with "You're the One"; The Vogues' most memorable hit, the classic "Five O'Clock World," cracked the Top Five before the year ended as well. Two more Top 40 entries, "Magic Town" and "The Land of Milk and Honey," followed in 1966, and when the group resurfaced in 1968 with the Top Ten smash "Turn Around, Look at Me," they had jumped to major label Reprise. The single, the Vogues' lone million-seller, anticipated the lighter, more sophisticated approach of subsequent hits like "My Special Angel," "Till," and "No, Not Much."
The real-life inspiration behind the hit television series The Partridge Family, the Cowsills -- comprised of teen siblings Bill, Bob, Barry, John, Susan, and Paul in tandem with mother Barbara -- were one of the biggest pop acts of the late '60s, scoring a series of hits including "The Rain, the Park and Other Things" and "Hair" with their angelic harmonies and sun-kissed melodies.

Born in Seminole, Texas, Tanya had her first country hit, the classic "Delta Dawn," at the age of 13 in 1972. Since that auspicious beginning, she has become one of the most admired and influential artists in country music history, amassing 23 Top 40 albums and a stellar string of 56 Top 40 singles, ten of which reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard country charts.

ACM Nominated ‘Duo Of The Year’ - LOCASH Playing Deadwood Mountain Grand
DEADWOOD, S.D. (02/15/22) – One of the hottest duo’s in country music will be bringing their high energy live show to Deadwood on Saturday, April 16th when LOCASH storms the Deadwood Mountain Grand Event Center stage. The current ACM nominated group for ‘Duo of the Year’ will take the stage for an 8pm performance.
Having signed to BMG/BBR Music Group’s, Wheelhouse Records, after a series of small independent deals, LOCASH brethren Preston Brust and Chris Lucas certainly have that story to tell – four No. 1s, a top five, three gold singles and three major award nominations. But that's not the most compelling narrative to be found in the fortuitous pairing of thoughtful songwriters with a natural chemistry as entertainers.
The question that most begs asking is, how have LOCASH managed to run the music industry gauntlet for the better part of a decade only to emerge stronger with a new album on a top label? Maybe it's because they're not just a couple guys who write and sing together. Their connection is, in fact, a lot more like family.
Baltimore native Lucas gave up sports for music and moved to Nashville in the early 2000s. "I was a baseball player and tore up my knee," he says. "I saw that as God's way of saying I was meant to be onstage." He met preacher's kid from Indiana by way of Arkansas Brust, the two hit it off and soon found work as between-band DJs.
"One of us would DJ and the other would go out on the mic as master of ceremonies," Chris says. Preston adds, "One day we were kind of bored, looked at each other and just walked out there at the same time. In that moment we realized we had something when it came to engaging an audience and knowing what they wanted."
"The best way I can describe it is like watching Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin on TV with my grandfather," Chris says. "I'm not comparing us to those guys – they're legendary – but it felt like we had that kind of chemistry in front of a crowd."
While the bands played, Chris and Preston were backstage comparing musical notes and working on harmonies. "I was showing him stuff from secular music and he was teaching me gospel harmony," Chris says.
“After a few months of that, we'd developed a real sound," Preston continues. "Gospel group harmonies are often built around a family blend and we realized we'd created something that really felt like that. In a way, we sounded like brothers. That's what got us thinking about becoming a duo."
They did just that, finding something unique along the way. "Chris has taught me so much about how songs are written and sounds are formulated in the secular world," Brust says. "There's nothing he can't sing, especially up top. I think I knew the potential of his voice long before he did. Because of that, I knew we'd develop a sound that went wherever we wanted with harmony and lead vocals. That's a weapon."
Likewise, Lucas sees his partner as a perfect complement. "I would never want to be doing this on my own," he says. "I need Preston's attitude, his confidence and his musicality. I have no idea how to do under-harmonies and he's got the ear we need to figure that stuff out. He's also a master of melody. We could be writing with best in town, but when we get in that room, I'm looking at Preston first. He knows exactly who we are and what works for us. I trust him completely."
Preston quips, "That just means if a song doesn't hit it's my fault."
"And he always knows the right thing to say, as you see," Chris laughs. “He handles things so much better than I do— I’ve got a little more Baltimore in me, which isn't always a bad thing. We round each other out."
Their spark drew the attention of an independent label and, when that one closed, another and another. "Throwing in the towel is often easier than hanging in when things get tough," Preston says. "'Hey, the record label folded. I guess that's it.' There's always an excuse. But we carry on and that resonates in our music. There's a bigger picture."
Through that stretch, LOCASH were building a fan base and having another kind of success as songwriters. "You Gonna Fly" was a No. 1 for Keith Urban and "Truck Yeah" was a top 10 for Tim McGraw.
"We've had our share of record deals, some better than others," Chris says. "Everything's a step in life, the key is to keep the steps going forward ... going up. Even if you fall back, got to keep stepping up. That's what LOCASH is all about."
The big step up was 2015's The Fighters, which included chart-topping, gold selling singles "I Love This Life" and "I Know Somebody." "Ring on Every Finger" reached the Top 20. Their success earned 2017 duo of the year nominations from the ACM, CMA and CMT. Those accolades, nice as they are, are simply by-products of the duo's easy connection with their fans. In fact, when Chris and Preston reflect on the world and their place in it, the stats never come up at all.
Instead, they focus on those fans and how their new music will be received. The first LOCASH single for Wheelhouse Records, "Feels Like a Party," was co-written and produced by Corey Crowder and Tyler Hubbard. "Sometimes people in the business will wonder if an artist can 'get away' with a song like that," Preston says, "but I recently had someone say to me, 'We need stuff like this. Taking a short vacation in a song has its own kind of impact.' That affected the way I thought about it and we're proud to be the guys who can deliver that kind of positivity for people.”
Chris elaborates: "We write every day and are purposeful in focusing on the positive. Everybody has issues and there are tons of problems in the world. There's a place and time to talk about that, but as kids we both turned to music to pick us up. So over our first two albums and definitely this new one, we want to make you smile. We're not trying to change the world. Or are we?"
Even as LOCASH embrace the upbeat, they find a balance with deeper songs like the title track of their new album "Brothers," also co-written with Crowder and Hubbard. They focus on inclusion and embracing each other, as depicted in their current Top 30 single, “One Big Country Song.” People have taken notice to their uplifting sentiment and relatability, earning them nominations for “Duo of the Year” at both the 2019 ACM Awards and CMT Awards.
That's not just the message in the music; it's the truth about their journey. "We've figured out how to build careers, lives and families we're proud of," Preston says. "We keep climbing – rung by rung. Sometimes the next one seems just out of our reach and that's when we lift each other up. We grind. We persevere. And in that way, we're just like the people we make music for."
Now that's a story worth telling.
