Casey Donahew, Kody West Headline the 8th Annual Red Dirt Music Festival at Deadwood Mountain Grand

DEADWOOD, SD. (10/03/22) – Now in its 8th year, the Deadwood Red Dirt Music Festival at Deadwood Mountain Grand has fast become one of the biggest music festivals in the upper mid-west. The event, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, January 13th and 14th will feature Casey Donahew and Kody West as headliners along with a roster of some of the best performers in Red Dirt music.

The event produced by Deadwood Mountain Grand, debuted in 2015 with nearly 5,000 fans attending two days of the best in music from the Red Dirt genre. Red Dirt is the color of soil found in Oklahoma and Texas. They are the homes of a music genre that spawned Outlaw Country legends like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson and created a home grown movement of Americana, folk and alt-country sounds. Some define Red Dirt music as “country music with attitude”. Others say it’s a state of mind as much as it is a sound – a sound that successfully closes the gap between rock and country.

Regardless of definition, Red Dirt fans are loyal and have come in droves in previous years to Deadwood Mountain Grand. “We absolutely love this event,” said Susan Kightlinger, General Manager of Deadwood Mountain Grand. “The music is incredible, the fans come to party and the atmosphere is electric. Plus, it’s nice to bring 5,000 people to Deadwood in the middle of January.”

Headlining the festival is the wildly popular Casey Donahew. Donahew has released eight independent albums to critical and commercial acclaim. Donahew’s “Standoff”, quickly topped the iTunes Country Chart at #1, upon its release, and his follow-up album All Night Party”, out on August 19, 2016, immediately rocketed to #3 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart, #13 on the Top Album Sales Chart and Top Current Album Sales Chart and #40 on the Billboard 200 Chart. The project also took the #2 spot on the Internet Albums Chart and landed at #3 on the Independent Albums Chart.

His 15th anniversary record titled “15 Years, The Wild Ride”, a collection of Donahew’s most popular songs, and the ones that droves of fans sing night after night at his live concerts, was inspired by and became a gift for those fans who remain loyal in Donahew’s standing-room-only audiences.  His current album “One Light Town”, garnered Donahew his latest #1 single, “Let’s Make A Love Song, which was the #1 most played independent song on country radio for 2019 and had BILLBOARD spouting upon its release “…’Let’s Make A Love Song’ has radio written all over it”.

Supporting Donahew on Friday night will be Corey Kent and Josh Meloy. Rising singer/songwriter Corey Kent has been writing and performing for nearly 2 decades. His tenacity, entrepreneurial mindset and drive matched with his vocal prowess and raw, relatable lyrics have helped Kent rise among the many.

Self-described as an “old soul,” Kent finds himself musically at the intersection of rock-infused country, heartland values and red dirt grit. His Texas hustle has poised him as Nashville’s next star power.

Having developed his live show for over 15 years, the entertainer has shared stages with acts such as Parker McCollum, Cody Johnson and Eli Young Band. Drawing inspiration from The Eagles, Keith Richards, Turnpike Troubadours and more, Kent’s undeniable stage presence and bandana-wearing Rock ‘N’ Roll spirit comes to life on the stage.

In December of 2021, Corey released his sophomore album, '21, to an overwhelmingly positive reception, with the record making its way up to the #4 debut album on Spotify in the U.S. that week, landing the covers of Amazon Music's Texas Music Forever playlist and Spotify's Texas Country Now as well as being named Country Riser of the Month on Apple Music for March 2022.

In March of 2022, Kent released his smash hit single, "Wild As Her," which hit the #1 spot on Apple Music's Country Chart for ten days and landed on Spotify's U.S. Viral Top 50 Chart (all-genre) at #7 and GLOBAL Viral Top 50 Chart at #36 as the only Country act featured. Since then, it has racked up over 50 Million streams in the first 100 days and can be heard on SiriusvXM's The Highway, Spotify's Hot Country, Apple Music's Today's Country, and Amazon Music's Country Heat!

Oklahoma native, Josh Meloy recently released his new record “Oklahoma” in May of 2020. The record consists of a collection of songs written over the past 5 years. Meloy considers this his “best and most honest work to date”. Meloy recorded and produced the album at home giving it an undeniably authentic sound.

Meloy didn’t plan on playing music in the beginning. In a family with strong ties to music, he chose sports. It wasn’t until attending Oklahoma State University at the age of 19 that he first picked up a guitar. Meloy, now 26, has since matured as a musician and songwriter while earning a strong fan base touring the Oklahoma/Texas region.

Saturday’s headliner is one of the fastest growing stars in country music. Kody West started playing music in the beginning of 2014, eager to take on as many acoustic gigs and songwriting competitions in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area that he could. As a frequent support act of the Texas Country/Red Dirt band Dalton Domino and the Front Porch Family, he took on the role of tour manager beginning of 2015. On the road with the band, he rapidly gained valuable hands-on experience working and playing music across the state of Texas. Thanks to his time on the road and his ability to fill in and play when needed, he was quick to gain a fast following of loyal fans.

Kody recorded his first full production EP later that year in Stephenville, Texas with producers Ben Hussey and Josh Serrato. The EP titled Higher Ground released January of 2016 with "Playing Cards" as the first strong, poignant single. Kody's music has been described as a mix of Texas Country and Bluegrass with some good-for-the-soul grooves.

Shortly after his EP release, Kody formed a full band in order to continue his commitment to travel across the country playing his tunes to the masses.

Warming up for West on Saturday includes Red Dirt stalwarts, Randall King and Jake Worthington.

Take a seat at any old roadhouse bar and look to your left and right. Some people will be there drinking for fun, and others to forget. But on “Shot Glass”, the major label album debut from Warner Music Nashville’s Randall King, none of them are drinking alone.

A country-music purist whose style carries on an original American art form –with all its highs and lows included –King is something of a study in contrast, and his album is too. He often sounds like he just stepped out of a time machine, full of upbeat honky-tonk swagger and flashing the thoughtful gaze of Western poet. But he’s also got a thoroughly modern edge, driven to prove timeless tradition can co-exist with the pop-country mainstream. And it all comes together on “Shot Glass”.

Four years after his independent self-titled album kicked things off, the West-Texas native has now made the move to Music City, marking the start of a whole new chapter. He’s following a pair of visionary EPs with a top-shelf concept album–and in the process, buying all of classic country another round. “I’m that rowdy honky-tonk artist,” King says with conviction. “But I’ve got music and roots that go deeper than just beer-slingin’ tunes. There’s a lot of depth.”

Inspired by everyone from George Strait and Keith Whitley to Dierks Bentley and Eric Church, King grew up on the endless plains and endless highways of a mythical place in the American story –but its famous ways were never mere fantasy to him. The hardscrabble days, wild nights and heartbreaks were all just part of an everyday cycle, and his music continues to capture that mystique.

Kicking off the festival will be rising star and “The Voice” runner-up in 2014, Jake Worthington. In 2014, Jake Worthington was named "Runner-Up" on Season 6 of the hit NBC TV Show "The Voice". While on the show, Jake released three songs that reached top 20 on Billboard.  Success from “The Voice” led to a Social Media presence that reaches nearly 250,000 people across the US.

In October 2015, Jake released his first EP debuting at #16 Billboard Heat Seekers and #44 Billboard Country Albums. The first single off the EP “Just Keep Falling In Love” reached Top 50 on The Music Row Chart and Top 30 on The Texas Regional Radio Report. The Video was featured on GAC, CMT, and many other outlets.

In the summer of 2016, he released his follow-up single “How Do You Honky Tonk” and hit the road on the “How Do You Honky Tonk” Summer Tour sponsored by Amspec, Cinch Jeans, and Ernie Ball. The tour featured 26 stops in 16 states.

In 2017, Jake released his sophomore EP “Hell of a Highway” featuring hit songs “Don’t Think Twice” and “A Lot of Room to Talk”. He is currently working on a new album and is ready to hit the road in 2023.

Ian Munsick Makes Headlining Return To Deadwood Mountain Grand

DEADWOOD, S.D. (08/31/22) – One of the most popular rising stars in country music will make a return visit to Deadwood Mountain Grand when Ian Munsick takes the stage on Thursday, November 17th.

Breathing fresh Rocky Mountain air into the Nashville music scene, Ian Munsick is pioneering a new brand of country. The Wyoming-born singer / songwriter’s upbringing was a mix of working the ranch and working crowds. Under the tutelage of their fiddle-playing father, Munsick and his two older brothers grew up playing everything from bluegrass to The Beatles. Captivated by traditional lyrical truth and the modern soundscape, Munsick followed his ear to Music City.

After establishing a robust touring career as an independent artist, he signed a major label record deal with Warner Music Nashville in 2020. Since then, he has accumulated more than 250 million global streams as well as accolades from Spotify (“Hot Country Artist to Watch”), MusicRow magazine (“Next Big Thing”) and more.

His debut album Coyote Cry features his mile-high tenor underscoring self-penned songs that conjure “equal parts epic adventure and down-to-earth wisdom” (American Songwriter). It marks the dawn of western pop-laced country, pulling a thread straight from Chris LeDoux through Post Malone. Imagery-soaked ode to the west “Long Haul” earned Munsick his second iHeartRadio Rocky Mountain Country Music Award for Song of the Year. The recent releases of “Long Live Cowgirls” (with Cody Johnson) and “More Than Me” are ushering in the next chapter of his musical saga... and fans are finding that, with Ian Munsick, western country is reborn.

“We are so happy to welcome our Wyoming hero back at Deadwood Mountain Grand,” said Susan Kightlinger, General Manager. “He thrilled our audience during the Red Dirt Music Festival in 2021 and we can’t wait to have him headlining this November.”

Deadwood Mountain Grand Presents An Acoustic Evening With Lyle Lovett And John Hiatt

DEADWOOD, S.D. (07/11/22) – Legendary singers, songwriters, actors and lyricists Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt are set to perform one night only on Monday, October 24th in the Deadwood Mountain Grand Event Center.

A singer, composer, and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel, and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers.

Whether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or his ‘Large Band,’ Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music.

Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was named Texas State Musician.

His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any artist working today.

A master lyricist and satirical storyteller, John Hiatt delivers songs filled with tales of redemption, relationships, and surrendering on his own terms. Hiatt’s finest album is 1987’s Bring the Family; other catalog highlights include the pop and rock of 1983’s Riding with the King, the rough-hewn blues-rock of 2008’s Same Old Man, and 2021’s Leftover Feelings.

His lyrics and melodies have graced more than 20 studio albums, have been recorded by Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, and scores of others, and have earned him a place in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, a BMI Troubadour award, and a lifetime achievement in songwriting designation from the Americana Music Association.

“We are so excited to have not one, but two legendary performers on stage at Deadwood Mountain Grand in one night,” said Deadwood Mountain Grand General Manager Susan Kightlinger. “This will be a show to remember.”

Theory Of A Deadman And All Good Things Announce New Date At Deadwood Mountain Grand

DEADWOOD, S.D. (05//02/22) – Alternative rock giants Theory of a Deadman with support act All Good Things have announced a new date for their performance at Deadwood Mountain Grand following their 2021 postponement due to the COVID-19 epidemic. The new date has been scheduled for Sunday, October 2nd, 2022.

If tickets were purchased for the original show, they may be used for the new date.

From hits like “Bad Girlfriend” to “Lowlife” and “RX (Medicate)”, Theory of a Deadman has made a huge career out of post grunge alternative rock hits throughout the 2000’s. Songs make statements at just the right time. Born at the intersection of insurgency and inspiration, music props up a sounding board for the people to be heard.

A whirlwind two years awakened this feeling in the group. After nearly two decades together, Theory landed their biggest career hit in the form of “Rx (Medicate)” from 2017’s Wake Up Call. Not only did it receive a platinum plaque, generate 100 million-plus streams, and become their third number one on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, but it also received a nomination in the category of “Rock Song of the Year” at the iHeartRadio Music Awards.

The musicians quietly reached this high watermark by remaining consistently prolific. To date, their discography encompassed the double-platinum single “Bad Girlfriend,” platinum single “Not Meant To Be,” platinum album Scars & Souvenirs, and gold singles “Angel” and “Hate My Life.” Plus, they notched two Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200, namely Truth Is… [2011] and Savages [2014], as well as eight top tens on Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. In addition to selling out shows worldwide, they’ve toured with everyone from Alter Bridge and Bush to Stone Sour and Big Wreck and more.

In 2018, Connolly turned his attention towards the next chapter. It started at a Los Angeles dinner with Wake Up Call producer Martin Terefe. “I went out to dinner before Halloween with Martin, began discussing the record, went home, and had a panic attack,” recalls Connolly. “After ‘Rx (Medicate)’, there was a lot to figure out. It was really fantastic, but I don’t think we had a lot of time to live in it and digest it. There was pressure. I was like, ‘Okay, I have to get to work’. One day when I woke up, I knew what I needed to communicate. I was motivated to talk about things I want to talk about and not just write about girls. It’s not where I was 15 years ago, but here I am now.”

Theory Of A Deadman amplify this voice on their seventh full-length offering, Say Nothing [Roadrunner Records/Atlantic Worldwide]. The award winning multiplatinum Los Angeles-based Canadian band—Tyler Connolly [lead vocals, guitar], Dave Brenner [guitar, backing vocals], Dean Back [bass], and Joey Dandeneau [drums]—flip the pulse of the world into scorching songcraft, integrating experimental vision, rock ‘n’ roll attitude, and clever pop ambition.

In the midst of this storm, Connolly and Co. speak up like never before. “This album allowed me to say all of the things that were on my mind earlier, but I was too afraid to say,” the frontman admits. “Our previous material was pretty much all relationship-driven. Everything was about me being unhappy. This one was about what’s going on in the world, the state of American politics, and everything else. It was a completely different way of writing for us. I remember Dave asked me, ‘Hey dude, did you watch a lot of CNN or what?’,” he laughs.

“What makes this record important is the content,” Brenner elaborates. “Tyler approaches some really tough topics like domestic violence and racism. We never did that in the past. ‘Rx (Medicate)’ opened the door though. This is almost a continuation. There are real discussions happening in the tracks backed by heavy stuff to make you think.” Once again, the group hopped a plane to London and worked out of Terefe’s Kensaltown studio. Staying in an Airbnb for six weeks, they pushed themselves creatively like never before, incorporating new sounds and sonics.

Theory introduce Say Nothing with the single “History Of Violence.” Finger-picked guitar by Brenner brushes up against the singer’s searing snapshot of a woman afflicted by abuse at the hands of her husband. Between sweeping strings and airy solos, Connolly sings, “She need a sedative to get her straight, ya know she need a cigarette, she got the shakes, put them sunglasses on her, hide her face, such a waste…maybe the way out is a .38.” “It’s a story about a woman who gets beat by her significant other, shoots him, kills him, and goes to jail,” he explains. “Even though she’s in jail, it’s still a better place to be than being imprisoned in real life by this man. It’s very similar to stories we hear in the news all the time, unfortunately.”

A pilgrimage to Abbey Road Studios left its fingerprints on “Ted Bundy.” Swaggering piano and boisterous horns resound beneath a Sgt. Peppers-gone-Silence-of-the-Lambs story. “We did a private tour of Abbey Road, and I got to play on The Beatles piano,” recalls Connolly. “We went up to the room where they played ‘A Day in the Life’. When we got back to our studio, we were so inspired. We put tuba on ‘Ted Bundy’.

After six albums, we don’t want to be complacent or stale. We try different things. Lyrically, it’s funny. I watched a documentary and got inspired to write about Ted Bundy falling in love.” Elsewhere, a gospel choir kicks off “Quicksand,” adding yet another dimension to the aural palette. Meanwhile, the orchestration on “Black Hole Of Your Heart” moves in lockstep with an arena-ready beat punctuated by creaky guitar, nodding to Silverchair’s Diorama. “All around, we really pushed ourselves in terms of the sound,” adds Brenner. “It’s like we finally fit the square peg in the round hole here!” In many ways, “Strangers” encapsulates a pervasive feeling and strikes a chord with its powerful and provocative prose. “It’s about what’s going on in America with politics,” says Connolly. “You have to pick a side. It’s interesting how people stick to their party and forget the country. We’re all like strangers now. It’s gotten too nasty.”

However, Theory’s music might be something everyone can ultimately agree on. “I look at the record as a microcosm of our current era,” Brenner concludes. “It’s a reminder to look inward at what’s happening and what we’re becoming. I hope everyone dives into the words. At the same time, music is still an escape. Maybe we can give the world a little solace and encourage everyone to treat each other better.” “We just want to write what speaks to us,” Connolly leaves off. “The best thing is when people sing lyrics back to you, or if a song gets somebody through a tough time. There’s something we all might be able t

Straight No Chaser Kicks Off Their 2022 Tour With A Stop At Deadwood Mountain Grand

DEADWOOD, S.D. (05/02/22) – Chart-topping a cappella group Straight No Chaser will celebrate their 25th anniversary in 2022 with a 62-date fall tour and their third PBS special airing nationwide starting in June. The group’s very first stop on the tour will take place at Deadwood Mountain Grand on Thursday, October 20th.

Formed during the 1996-1997 school year at Indiana University, a cappella group Straight No Chaser – which began, according to group member Steve Morgan as a “way to meet girls” – eventually emerged at the forefront of the modern day a cappella movement, and has since sold more than three million albums worldwide, garnered more than a billion streams, and sold more than 1.5 million concert tickets worldwide.

“When we started Straight No Chaser as college kids at Indiana University, we never imagined that 25 years later, we’d have two albums certified gold and tour dates around the world,” said group member Walter Chase.  “What a ride it has been.  It has literally been a dream come true.”

This fall, the group will kick off their “The 25th Anniversary Celebration” tour on October 20th in Deadwood, South Dakota, and will perform through New Year’s Eve, where the tour wraps up in Portland, OR. In total, this fall the group will perform 62 shows.  Tickets for most dates go on-sale this Friday, May 6th. A full itinerary is below.

In commemoration of “The 25th Anniversary Celebration,” Straight No Chaser will release an exclusive NFT to mark the occasion.  All details will be revealed in the coming days on Straight No Chaser’s site and social platforms (all links are below).

Additionally, PBS stations nationwide will air “Straight No Chaser: The 25th Anniversary Celebration,” starting this June.  The concert, filmed at the Murat Theatre at Old National Center in Indianapolis in 2019 where the group has sold out 27 shows, features the nine group members performing classics like “Proud Mary,” “Lean on Me” and “Twistin,’” as well as pop mash-ups, like “Uptown Funk/Thriller.”

Although best known for his hilarious stand-up, Ron White now has a chart-topping Grammy-nomination and a feature film on his resume. The comedian has always been a classic storyteller. Ron White began performing comedy in 1986 and was quickly opening for legendary comedians Sam Kinison and Jeff Foxworthy. After eventually becoming a comedy club headliner, in 2000 White was asked to join the Blue Collar Comedy Tour alongside Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy. The show toured for over three years to sold-out audiences in over 270 cities and grossed more than $35 million. The CD reached #1 on the BillboardTM Comedy Charts and remained there for 9 consecutive weeks. This success also earned White his first Grammy nomination.

Ron received his second Grammy nod for the show Blue Collar Comedy Tour - One for The Road. In 2009, Ron released his 3rd album Behavioral Problems, which reached #1 on the BillboardTM Comedy Chart. In 2013 Ron’s 4th album, A Little Unprofessional, also reached #1 on the BillboardTM Comedy Chart.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Ron White partnered with Netflix to release his most recent effort- the highly successful comedy special, “If You’d Quit Listening, I’d Shut Up.” As an actor, Ron White has had supporting roles in the major theatrical films Horrible Bosses and Sex and the City 2. He also had a principal role in Jayne Mansfield’s Car (written/directed by Billy Bob Thornton), He was a co-Executive Producer of Bridegroom, a Linda Bloodworth–Thomason documentary, which debuted at the 2013 NYC Tribeca Film Festival and won the Audience Award.

Country Rockers ‘The Steel Woods’ Taking The Stage At Deadwood Mountain Grand

DEADWOOD, S.D. (04/06/22) – On Sunday, June 26th The Steel Woods will bring their brand of country and Southern rock to the Deadwood Mountain Grand stage. The band, comprised of Wes Bayliss (guitar and vocals), Johnny Stanton (bassist), Isaac Senty (drums) and Tyler Powers (guitar), will perform fan favorites and songs from their three studio albums. All of their albums are self-produced and released on their own label, Woods Music.

The Steel Woods’ latest album, ‘All of Your Stones’, is the third offering from one of the fastest rising bands in the worlds of independent country and Southern rock. Since releasing their debut ‘Straw in the Wind’ album in 2017, The Steel Woods have staked their claim as worthy successors of Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd, with a dynamic live show and a songwriting verve that draws inspiration from country icons like Willie Nelson.

After Tragedy
In January 2021, band co-founder, guitarist and principal creative force Jason “Rowdy” Cope, passed away from what is thought to be complications of diabetes. This tragedy sent shockwaves through Cope’s friends, family, and the music community at large. The songs that make up ‘All of Your Stones’ now sound eerily prescient given Cope’s passing. Most of the tunes came from the creative pen and guitar of Rowdy, but even the ones contributed by Bayliss (“Ole Pal”) and guest songwriter Ross Newell have taken on a special poignancy.

The Music Continues
The Steel Woods continue to tour, having shared the stage with Whiskey Myers, Cody Jinks, Cody Johnson, and Blackberry Smoke, among others. Between shows, they are at work on their next studio album. The Band’s upcoming concert in Deadwood will deliver all the energy and passion that has become synonymous with The Steel Woods.

Tickets for The Steel Woods go on sale at 10am, Friday, April 8th. For more information, visit www.deadwoodmountaingrand.com or call 605-559-0386.
