‘Joy To The World’ - Three Dog Night Returning To Deadwood Mountain Grand

DEADWOOD, S.D. (03/06/23) – Three Dog Night is one of the most iconic rock bands in music history. A band that had 21 consecutive Top 40 hits, including three #1 singles, 11 Top 10’s, 18 straight Top 20’s, seven million-selling singles and 12 straight Gold records. They will return to the Deadwood Mountain Grand stage for a performance on Saturday, June 3rd.

The band, now in its 5th decade claims some of the most astonishing statistics in popular music. In the years 1969 through 1974, no other group achieved more top 10 hits, moved more records or sold more concert tickets than Three Dog Night.

“When we heard we had an opportunity to host an iconic band like Three Dog Night once again at Deadwood Mountain Grand we jumped at the chance,” said Susan Kightlinger, General Manager. “They have an unbelievable amount of hit songs and their live performances are outstanding, so we know it’s going to be a great show!”

Three Dog Night hits weave through the fabric of pop culture today, whether on the radio where they are heard day in and day out, in TV commercials or in major motion pictures. Songs like “Mama Told Me (Not To Come)”, “Joy To The World”, “Never Been To Spain”, “Black And White”, “Shambala” and “One” serve to crystallize Three Dog Night’s continuing popularity.

Created in 1968 by Danny Hutton, THREE DOG NIGHT maintains an aggressive, year round touring schedule of over 90 dates a year, performing their hit filled concerts for multi-generational audiences. The band’s now-famous name refers to native Australian hunters in the outback who huddled with their dogs for warmth on cold nights; the coldest being a “three dog night”.

The band recorded songs of the best and largely undiscovered new songwriters of its time including Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Elton John, Laura Nyro, Paul Williams and Hoyt Axton among many others. The group’s eclectic taste, combined with its ability to recognize and record hits in a unique, distinctive, and appealing style, resulted in here Dog Night dominating the charts for years.

The band’s music transcends time, bringing together both new and longtime audiences alike. Three Dog Night demonstrates its eclectic song choices once again with the new material being recorded for an upcoming album release. One of the new tracks, “Prayer of the Children” was discovered by Hutton who created an a cappella arrangement, so that for the first time in the history of Three Dog Night, the vocals of all six members of the band are featured. The song is currently part of their live concert set and quickly becoming an audience favorite.

Marking over 50 years on the road, Three Dog Night continues to grow its fan base by keeping up a full schedule of concerts at theatres, performing arts centers, fairs, festivals, corporate events, and casinos.

Grand Funk Railroad With Jefferson Starship Announce Date At Deadwood Mountain Grand

DEADWOOD, S.D. (12/12/22) – “You cannot talk about rock in the 1970s without talking about Grand Funk Railroad!” - David Fricke, Rolling Stone Magazine. This quote sums up the legacy that is Grand Funk Railroad. The iconic band joins forces with Jefferson Starship for a one-night-only performance at Deadwood Mountain Grand on Thursday, April 13th.

Originating from Flint, Michigan in 1969, this top selling American rock group of the 70’s is “Comin’ To Your Town To Help You Party Down!”  Grand Funk Railroad is extremely excited to be touring in 2023 marking a 54-year milestone. After playing to millions of fans on the band’s tours from 1996 to 2022, Grand Funk’s 2023 Tour with Jefferson Starship will continue to reach both new and long-time fans.

Known as “The American Band,” the high-energy five-piece group will play forty shows all over the USA this year. Grand Funk Railroad includes original founding members Don Brewer (vocals and drums, writer and singer of the multi-million selling hit, “We’re an American Band”) and bassist Mel Schacher, “The God of Thunder.” Joining Don and Mel are true “All Stars.” Singer Max Carl is a rock veteran from 38 Special. Max penned and sang 38’s highest-charting hit Second Chance and was co-founder of California’s legendary Jack Mack and the Heart Attack. Don refers to Max as “the best blue-eyed soul singer on the planet.”

Lead guitarist Bruce Kulick is best known for his 12 years with KISS and also has credits with Michael Bolton, Meatloaf and Billy Squier. (KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were influenced early on by Grand Funk.) Keyboardist Tim Cashion has a master’s degree in music from the University of Miami. Affectionately called “Dr. Tim,” his credits include stints with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band and English soul man Robert Palmer.

Grand Funk laid the groundwork for such bands as Foreigner, Journey, Van Halen and Bon Jovi with its signature hard driving sound, soulful vocals, muscular instrumentation and forceful pop melodies. The fact that Grand Funk’s legacy still reigns over the Classic Rock landscape fifty years after its 1969 birth in Flint, Michigan is a testament to the group’s influence and staying power.

Mega-hits “We’re an American Band”, “ I’m Your Captain/Closer to Home”, “Locomotion”, and “Some Kind of Wonderful”  still receive continuous airplay on

Classic Rock radio. “We’re an American Band” has received notoriety in recent years being used in movie soundtracks and in television/radio advertising. The huge hit was featured in a General Motors national TV ad campaign and in Disney’s animated feature film “The Country Bears”. The song was also featured in the Cuba Gooding Jr. film “RADIO”, and also in the swashbuckler “SAHARA” starring Matthew McConaughey.

The group’s widespread appeal is also evident in its prestigious recording achievements. Over their career, Grand Funk has had 19 charted singles, 8 Top 40 hits and two Number One singles “We’re an American Band” and “Locomotion”, both selling more than one million each. The group has now accumulated 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales in excess of 25 million copies sold worldwide.  The most recent gold CD award was presented to the band for their greatest hits package “Grand Funk Railroad the Collectors Series”.

The members of Jefferson Starship past and present have been exploring the mysteries of music for more than 1000 collective years. Give or take. But who's counting? Jefferson Airplane founding member Paul Kantner created Jefferson Starship with that collective spirit in mind and carried it with him throughout his life.

Kantner knew that combining powerful creative forces, personalities and talents could create something far greater than the sum of its parts. Between 1974 and 1984, Jefferson Starship released eight gold and platinum selling albums, twenty hit singles, sold out concerts worldwide and lived out legendary rock and roll escapades.

Today's Jefferson Starship remains dedicated to breathing new life into the living catalog of the Jefferson legacy, going to the edge, pushing the sonic boundaries and staying true to the original spirit of the music, on and off stage.

In 2014-15, the band played a series of free concerts for America's Veterans and was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the US Department of Defense.

Co- founder David Freiberg also started another Fillmore- era San Francisco band, Quicksilver Messenger Service, who often shared the bill with the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. David is a world class singer, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He was also a member of Jefferson Airplane, and co- wrote one of Jefferson Starship’s all-time biggest hits, “Jane” – which he sings. David is the band's Buddha and guru. If you get into the same room with David, you will be blessed.

Donny Baldwin became part of the San Francisco music scene in the early 70s growing up there. From 1973 to 1978 Donny was with the Elvin Bishop Band. During this time he toured and recorded six albums, which included the #1 hit single, “Fooled Around and Fell In Love”. Donny was a member of Jefferson Starship from 1981 to 1989. In January 1994, he joined the Jerry Garcia Band. He has toured and recorded with Kenny Loggins, Pablo Cruise, Chuck Berry, Van Morrison, Ronnie Montrose, Greg Allman, Heart, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, .38 Special and Eddie Money. Donny returned to Jefferson Starship in 2008. His driving, rock solid grooves are the backbone and his super- high harmonies provide a glorious sheen to the sound of the band.

Cathy Richardson joined Jefferson Starship in 2008, and anchors the historic role made famous by Grace Slick. Her professional credits include fronting her own bands- CRB, Macrodots and Nelson Street Revival- producing and releasing seven independent albums. She was nominated for a GRAMMY Award for Art Direction of Cathy Richardson Band’s 2003 release, “The Road to Bliss." She starred as Janis Joplin in the original Off Broadway cast of “Love, Janis” and also in Chicago, Sag Harbor, NY, San Francisco, Phoenix and Tucson and has toured the US as lead singer with Janis' original band, Big Brother and the Holding Co. Cathy recently released a download-only single, What I Am, available on iTunes.

Chris Smith joined Jefferson Starship in 1998, instantly winning the job of keyboardist, after touring with the Supremes and Lou Bega. Chris' film and television music has been heard on dozens of shows including the #1 rated series “CSI” and the Academy Awards telecast. In 2000, he assumed the seeming impossible task of playing piano AND (synth) bass simultaneously. Chris has been keyboardist longer than any in the band’s history. Chris grew up in the suburbs of Connecticut and currently resides in Los Angeles.

Lead guitarist Jude Gold jumped in for a 10 country, three- month international tour with 48 hours’ notice- when Slick Aguilar had to drop out to deal with a life threatening illness- and continues to this day to freak us all out with his awesomeness. Jude's innovative, monster chops take the Jefferson songbook to new dimensions and have made him an irreplaceable ingredient to the band's sound. Jude has toured with contemporary stars Miguel Migs, Stu Hamm and JGB.  He's an instructor at Musician’s Institute, Los Angeles Editor at Guitar Player Magazine and host of the podcast, No Guitar is Safe.

Aaron Watson Brings His Red Bandana Tour To Deadwood Mountain Grand

DEADWOOD, S.D. (07/18/22) – Country star Aaron Watson will be bringing his 2023 tour to Deadwood Mountain Grand on Thursday, April 27th in support of his all new album, ‘Unwanted Man’.

For over 20 years now, Aaron Watson has traveled the land as country’s ultimate underdog troubadour – a truly independent artist with the spirit of the American frontier in his veins, and a self-made empire to match.

Working without corporate backers, he has nonetheless reached the Top 10 of Billboard’s Country Album chart five separate times – an impressive feat by any standard – and that includes his triumphant 2015 set, The Underdog, which landed at Number One. Matching sold-out shows across the country with homegrown hits, he’s followed suit at country radio, making history in 2017 with “Outta Style” and “Run Wild Horses.” But despite the success, the Texas native remains a fighter punching far above his weight, constantly defending his right to be in the ring. And with his new album, Unwanted Man, he reminds all who care to listen that it’s just fine by him.

“It's not like, ‘Is there any gas left in the tank?’” Watson says, explaining the tireless drive behind his 18th studio set. “This is just who I am. I still without a doubt believe I haven't written my best song yet, and I kind of feel like I'm just getting started.”

Still pushing into the wind, Unwanted Man finds a creative renegade continuing to do what he does best, now working at the most “dangerous” level of his career. Counted out time and time again, the singer-songwriter reaffirms his steadfast commitment to his craft, and takes his go-it-alone spirit to new levels.

Eleven songs were written at home in the early months of the pandemic – with Watson’s “90-percent solo” writing style serving him well. He then co-produced the set with his drummer and studio mate, Nate Coon, and even shot the album cover himself, using his iPhone after his photographer contracted COVID-19. And then, just as the album was set for release, Watson suffered the first vocal injury of his career, with mandatory voice rest adding yet another wrinkle of adversity. But it was all taken in stride. This artist is used to weathering storms.

“You just have to roll with the punches,” Watson says, knowing full well what that means.

Seventeen years into his journey, Watson reached a hard-to-comprehend milestone in 2017, becoming one of the only independent artists to crack country radio’s Top 10 in the last half century. “Defying gravity” with his free-wheeling country rocker, “Outta Style,” he had a bonafide hit and almost two decades of sold-out momentum on his hands, reaching a pinnacle that should have sent him to the next level – yet still, Watson found the mainstream gates difficult to unlock.

Luckily, his fans didn’t care. They never stopped coming out, whether it was a massive stadium show like Rodeo Houston or a nameless dancehall on some dusty interstate off ramp, and in the time since, that truth not only sustained Watson, it became the bedrock of Unwanted Man.

“Because of these fans, I don't feel like an unwanted man,” he explains. “I built my career at the honky tonks, and I'm not mad at anyone – I don't have time. But it does motivate me to get back in there shake things up again. There are a lot of people out there who like what I do, so for them – and for myself – I’m going to keep pushing forward. That’s what this is all about.”

With its raw vocals and minimal production, the album’s title track sets Watson’s quest in motion, kicking off Unwanted Man with a thank you to his supporters. As it swells into a two-stepping romantic romper, his knack for hiding big themes in personal lyrics shines through … and not for the last time.

Cut in January 2021 in Tyler, Texas, it’s the first album Watson has recorded in his home state in a decade, and reflective themes of an outsider’s life in spotlight pepper the set – always presented as he sees fit.

With its grungy garage-rock vibe, “Cheap Seats” follows the thematic lead of “Unwanted Man,” pledging allegiance to the common concertgoers who remain his inspiration – rather than some faceless focus group. Elsewhere, “Old Man Said” recounts the tender wisdom that helped guide Watson to manhood and with a soft touch of heartland rock, “Crash Landing” finds a weary traveler looking to rest his heart.

Meanwhile, “Dancing Around the Truth” breathes fresh energy into the familiar one-last-time love song, “What’s Left of Me” tallies up the impact of time and tribulation, and the album ends on a Paul McCartney-inspired singalong, complete with sweeping strings epic emotions (“Once In a Life”).

Each one features the inventive songwriting and one-of-a-kind melodies of a true, untamed artist, striving to bring a singular vision to life, no matter the cost. And with the working-musician’s anthem, “Heck of a Song,” Watson promises to never stop.

Looking back, that’s the true theme of Unwanted Man. That at this point in his long career, Watson knows who he is, and he’s not about change. It might not be an easy road – or even one you can find on a map most of the time. But he’s free, and he knows it.

“I'm right where I wanna be,” Watson says. “No one can put any labels on me. And I tell a lot of younger artists, ‘Listen, there's enough room at the table for all of us. This is not a sprint. This is a long distance race.’”

Tickets for Aaron Watson go on sale for Deadwood Mountain Grand Reward Members at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 10 and to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday, January 13.  They will be available at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Box Office or at ticketmaster.com. Skid Row And Buckcherry – ‘The Gang’s All Here Tour’ Making A Stop At Deadwood Mountain Grand

DEADWOOD, S.D. (12/06/22) – Two of the seminal rock bands of the 90’s and 2000’s are joining forces when Skid Row and Buckcherry get together and co-headline ‘The Gang’s All Here’ tour in 2023 with a stop at Deadwood Mountain Grand on Saturday, March 11th.

Remember that first time you heard Skid Row?

“Youth Gone Wild” was on MTV. “18 and Life” was a summertime hit single and the band was on the covers of Hit Parader, Circus, and Metal Edge magazines. That exhilarating sound of being young was everywhere.

Rob Hammersmith saw himself in that gang mentality. “I was looking for that,” he remembers. “Everybody goes through that phase of me against the world, where you just have to stand up and assert yourself. Every kid goes through that, and Skid Row made you realize that you're not alone.”

Snake Sabo realized he wasn't alone after striking up a songwriting partnership with Rachel Bolan. “I saw all this talent he had — and has — and he brought something out of me. It made me go, man, this is the start of something. I'm like, yeah, this is where we're supposed to be at this moment in our lives. It was the birth of what would be Skid Row.”

That something — and that name — represented the unrelenting impulse of rambunctious kids, channeling their love of punk and metal into something understood by a worldwide audience of other kids just like them.

“Right when we came up with the name — Skid Row — that's when I realized we were going to build something really special that really drew on our influences,” Rachel remembers.

Their attitude and swagger was palpable in those songs. It was obvious. A demo of songs Rachel and Snake wrote together was the first time Scotti Hill heard Skid Row, and he wanted in. “It had three songs on it — including 'Clock Strikes Midnight' — and I loved all three of those songs. Right from the beginning, I loved where the music was going. I was like, I gotta be in this band!”

That band built something powerful and so timeless that years later, halfway around the world, it roused a young Swedish singer. “You're young, a bit crazy — fist in the air and yeah — that kind of feeling,” recalls Erik Grönwall. “Skid Row are the youth gone wild, and I wanted the same thing. I wanted that lifestyle.”

It's cliché́ to say that a band has all their lives to write a first album. The truth is that they spend the rest of their lives trying to understand how they did it. The Gang's All Here is the octane of an attitude that's been festering since the band formed in 1986. Producer Nick Raskulinecz lit a creative wildfire by challenging them to deconstruct good ideas and rebuild them into something even better. Something timeless. He became the arbiter of their legacy, daring them to revert to instinct and be the same rambunctious kids who made their first two albums.

“On 'World On Fire,' I had written this very cool riff. Nick said, play the chord up here, an octave up from the original notes. It created a difficult move, and I didn't know how to physically do that, but he challenged me. The one time I got it right, he goes, now that's Skid Row. That was a heavy moment for me, this guy having to bring something that is Skid Row out of me, yet I'm a founding member of the band!”

“We were kids,” Rachel says about writing songs that debuted Slave To The Grind at #1 on Billboard and made the self-titled album a #6 multi-platinum hit. “We wrote from a vastly different perspective. Nick got us back to that train of thought: what approach did we take on those first two records? What were we doing?”

“I wound up feeling the same as when we wrote “18 and Life” and “Youth Gone Wild,” he says. “I felt like, whoa! We're doing something really cool here!”

Making a new album did feel just like the beginning, when the gang meticulously crafted songs together in a garage in New Jersey. “It's so much fun doing it like that, in a room banging it out,” Scotti says. “This felt like we were back in that garage again, like the old days. The only difference is now we've got air conditioning and we're not breathing kerosene heater exhaust.”

That old school style makes the album ‘The Gang's All Here’ immediately familiar. It's the sound of having a good time. “A lot of the songs are fun,” Rachel says. “They're songs you can sing and move to, which is what our first two records did. You can fight to these songs. Drink to them. Strip to them. All the bases are covered.”

“A lot of people have taken this ride with us,” Snake says. “But even though we've all grown older — and somewhat wiser — the essence of who we all are still exists.”

Buckcherry is unique, complex, simple, passionate, explosive, original and always a good time. Lead Vocalist Josh Todd founded Buckcherry in the mid 90’s after bonding with guitarist Keith Nelson over a mutual appreciation of AC/DC in a California tattoo parlor. After recording music together, they added a bass player, Jonathan Brightman, and a drummer, Devon Glenn, and toured local bars and clubs in Hollywood, under the name Sparrow.

After gaining a local fan base due to their classic rock n roll style, they were quickly snapped up by Dreamsworks Records, and forced to change their name to legal reasons. The band claims they named themselves after a drag queen in Hollywood.

Buckcherry released their self-titled debut studio album in 1999, which was a commercial and critical success, with the album certified Gold. Following on from the album, the band toured extensively, with highlights including an opening slot for Lenny Kravitz and playing at Woodstock festival.

They quickly followed with a sophomore album “Time Bomb” in 2001, however they album was considered by fans and critics as a disappointment, and with various artistic differences and member changes within the group, the band eventually broke up in 2002

After Todd and Nelson flirted with a project with Guns N’ Roses member Slash, and wrote and produced records for other bands such as Velvet Revolver, they decided to reform Buckcherry for a second stint in 2005.

They unleashed their successful comeback album “15” in 2006, which marked the completion of a successful return for the group as it was certified platinum. Since their return, Buckcherry have continued to write fruitful albums, including 2013’s “Confessions”.

Since their comeback, the band have played on massive tours with rock behemoths KISS and Motley Crue, and contributed music to movie soundtracks such as the “Avengers Assemble”

Tickets for Skid Row and Buckcherry will go on sale on Friday, December 9th at 10am. The are available at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Box Office – The Spotlight Store – or at ticketmaster.com.
